The Atlantic Hotel, the first major hotel in the city, opened July 4, 1875. Besides the beach and ocean it offered dancing and billiard rooms to the visitors of its more than 400 rooms. By 1878 tourists could come by railroad from Berlin to the shores of Sinepuxent Bay across from the city. By 1881 a line was completed across Sinepuxent Bay to the shore, bringing rail passengers directly into the city.Wind and surf continually change the coastline. Piers and woodland once standing on the bayside are now projecting from the dunes on the ocean side. As the inner shoreline increases, it moves closer to the mainland, while the outer shoreline erodes away by the pounding surf, strong tides and yearly storms.
Whether you are casting a line for dinner or fishing for that tail-dancing billfish, you'll find the waters in and around Ocean City filled with action. Ocean City is world-famous for deep sea fishing, sailing, pleasure boating, bottom fishing in the bay, recreational fishing and an endless array of other watersports. Ocean City is comprised of hundreds of square miles of water, from gleaming waters of the bays, canals and rivers, to miles and miles of open sea, and there is plenty of action in every square mile for avid fishermen.
Life-Saving Station Museum - Dedicated to collecting and preserving the history of the United States Life-Saving Service on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, the museum also houses the unique and colorful history and heritage of Ocean City, Maryland. Wheels of Yesterday was founded in May 1997 by Granville Trimper who brought to fruition a great display for the young and the young at heart. There are over 30 gleaming exhibits to hold you enthralled. As you stroll through the museum, you'll see that many memories are evoked for the seniors in the crowd. They begin to match Jack Jarvis the curator, story for story about rumble seats on Model T's and the dangers presented by "suicide doors".
